Date: 1800-1820.

Walnut; resinous pine secondary wood, tulip poplar in some drawer bottoms, maple front stiles of the desk.

Provenance: Mark Smith (died 2021), a resident of Lynchburg, who may have acquired it in the region.

The desk and bookcase was one of the most impressive furniture forms a cabinetmaker could create. Its relative simplicity–lacking carving or veneers or inlays–-is balanced in part by walnut (a locally grown wood) of fine figure that imbues the object with visual depth and texture.
