Ray C. Strang (1893-1957) was born in Illinois and developed an interest in art at an early age. He pursued formal art education at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he honed his skills in painting and drawing. His training was interrupted by his service in WWI during which he sustained injuries. Following his service, Strang maintained a long and successful career as an illustrator in New York for various magazines and book publishers. He eventually moved out west and settled in Arizona, where he developed an accomplished oeuvre of "Old West" paintings likened to the skill of Frederic Remington.

"Attack on the Post" is a notable example of Strang’s engagement with the nostalgic west. The painting depicts a dramatic scene of conflict, likely inspired by historical events or military engagements. Here soldiers are dressed in early field uniforms from the US Army, which evolved from uniforms worn in WWI - a blue wool shirt and wool green pants often referred to as "olive drab."

The early 20th century was a time of significant change, including the aftermath of the Spanish-American War and the catastrophic events of the first world war. The themes of conflict and battle in Western scenes would have resonated with contemporary audiences who were grappling with their own experiences of conflict and change. "Attack on the Post" stands out as an example of Strang's skill in depicting conflict and resistance, showcasing his talent for creating compelling, narrative-driven art.
