Whether they are on boxes of gold inside small medallions on ivory or a watercolor, Isabey portrayed his patron Napoleon accompanied by the Empress Josephine between 1796 and 1806 several times, followed by the Empress Marie-Louise from 1810 onwards. On this watercolor, the imperial couple is represented with the king of Rome aged of three years. Several small portraits in miniature of the King of Rome as a baby and then as a child were realized by Isabey as well as a number of drawings marking the memorable moments of the political career of Bonaparte: le Sacre de Napoléon à Notre-Dame, son Mariage avec l’archiduchesse Marie-Louise, l’Avenement de L’Empire
