The town of Schoharie was established in the 18th century, formed as a district in 1772 and a town in 1788. The name "Schoharie" came from a Mohawk word meaning "floating driftwood" - before European colonization, the Mohawk Nation occupied much of upstate and western New York. The southern part of Schoharie County is situated within the Catskill Mountains; the Schoharie Creek, a tributary of the Mohawk River, flows in the middle of the county, and hills and valleys grace the northern part of the county.
