This graceful watercolor by Édouard Traviès presents two delicately observed studies of mice, rendered with the precision and tonal subtlety that define the work of one of the most important natural history illustrators of nineteenth century France. Traviès occupies a central place in the development of zoological art, standing alongside Audubon, Barraband, and Gould as one of the era’s great interpreters of the natural world.

Born in 1809 and active in Paris during the flourishing of natural history publishing, Traviès was widely admired for his extraordinary ability to combine scientific fidelity with an artist’s sensitivity to posture, texture, and expression. His contributions to Histoire Naturelle and his celebrated plates for Les Oiseaux Les Plus Remarquables set new standards for French ornithological illustration, helping to elevate the genre from documentary record to fine art. His work was so highly regarded that major naturalists and publishers sought him out, and he exhibited at the Paris Salon for decades.

Although best known for his birds, Traviès’ studies of mammals reveal the same mastery. In the present watercolor, two mice are shown with remarkable delicacy: one in soft, rounded repose, the other crisp in profile. The washes are controlled yet lively, capturing both anatomical accuracy and the quiet character of the animals.

Traviès’ importance lies not only in the beauty of his images but in his influence on the visual language of zoological representation. His drawings shaped the way European audiences understood and appreciated wildlife, bridging scientific illustration and artistic expression.

Beautifully preserved and handsomely framed, Two Mice is an intimate example of the skill and subtlety that secured Traviès’ place among the most significant natural history artists of his century.
