Matthias Withoos, Pieter’s father, was a prominent Dutch artist specializing in painting city views, land scapes, portraits, still-lifes, and plants and insects. He spent two years in Rome, gaining widespread recognition for his natural history works, and frequently worked for the renowned Cardinal de Medici.
