SACHSE, EDWARD & CO.

Bird's Eye View of the City of Annapolis, the Capitol of Maryland.

Baltimore, ca 1855

Paper Size:18.7 x 33.5 inches.

A wonderful large colored lithograph, by E. Sachse & Co., one of two important lithography companies operating in Baltimore during the mid-nineteenth century, showing the beauty of the state capitol.
It was made, presumably just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. Among the prominent structures highlighted are, in the center with a large wooden dome, is the Maryland State House, the oldest continually used state house in the country. The campus on the right is the young, fledgling US Naval Academy, which was established only ten years earlier in 1845.
St. Anne's church is seen beyond the senate house to the left, to the right is St. John's College. On the extreme left is the old Carroll Mansion, birthplace of Charles Carroll of Carrollton and the church and monastery of the Redemptorist Order. In the lower border of the print is an insert of the Governor's Mansion.
