HUGHES, John T. (1817-1862). Doniphan’s Expedition; Containing an Account of the Conquest of New Mexico... Cincinnati: U. P. James, [1847, but later].

$675.00

8vo., (9 3/8 x 5 7/8 inches). Vignette title page (2 small chips to margins of first two leaves, not affecting text). 3 full-page maps; engraved frontispiece; 8 in-text illustrations (some light spotting, occasional offsetting). Original publisher’s printed green wrappers, preserved in a modern folding cloth box (expertly rebacked, one or two small pale stains).

Provenance: Contemporary manuscript ownership inscription of J. H. Cartwright to the margin of p. 24.

First edition, later printing. “Cheap edition” issue, with the list of embellishments, lacking the footnote on p. 25. A bright and crisp copy of the fascinating “adventures of the First Regiment of Missouri Cavalry in New Mexico and Chihuahua” (Wagner-Camp). “Doniphan’s and Kearney’s conquests gave the United States its claim to New Mexico and Arizona, finally acquired by the Gadsen Purchase” (Howes). This undated copy likely dates to 1854 or later, after the dissolution of the partnership of J. A. and U. P. James in July of that year, as only U. P. James’s name is printed here (Wagner-Camp-Becker).
