Rare Arctic Maritime Scene printed by Remondini in Bassano in 1760 ca after George Balthasar Probst showing the Greenland Whale Fishery with polar bears (coloured in brown!), large boats and ships in the Arctic sea. Below title in Latin and French.
The vue d’optique (vue perspective or perspective view) was a genre of etching very popular during the second half of the 18th century and into the 19th.
Vues d’optique were specifically developed to provide the illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope or a peep box. By their nature these kind of etchings are often with several traces of use, early mounting, little tears or margins trimmed but are surely really fascinating pieces of history.
