Folding engraved map of the United States and 19 folding state maps, 2 folding letterpress tables at the end (some staining, a bit browned). Contemporary American sheep, the smooth spine gilt-ruled in six compartments, red morocco lettering-piece in one (extremities worn with minor loss, lacking front free endpaper). Provenance: with the ownership inscription of Melvin G. Bowditch on the verso of the map of the Upper Territories. Fourth edition, first published in 1796 with only 19 maps. The maps of the states include Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts (closed tear crossing the text and with early repair on verso), Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Map of Ohio State, Maryland, Virginia, Kentuckey (sic), North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi Territory, Louisiana, Missouri Territory formerly Louisiana, and the Upper Territories of the United States. The two maps of Louisiana and Missouri are some of the earliest published to reflect the discoveries of Lewis and Clark. The explanatory notes include information up to 1812 when the "territory of New Orleans was formed into a state and called Louisiana" (page 166).
