8vo., (7 ¼ x 5 ¾ inches). Original publisher’s maroon cloth, stamped in blind to both covers, with publisher’s monogram on lower cover; the smooth spine titled in gilt (one or two pale stains, head and foot of spine a bit worn; inner joints cracked but holding).

Provenance: Contemporary manuscript presentation inscription by the author: “Compliments of E. J. Jenkins” dated April 28th 1881 in a different hand. Ink stamp of L. H. Sargent to p. 9.

First edition. “KANSAS! – the land of cottonwoods, grouse and good things; the land of ambrosial springs and Indian summer autumns; the land that secured the coronet of stars through difficulty – has a history, all of whih has not been written” (p. 9). The author’s first and only book attempts to address the dearth of written history about Kansas, twenty years after it achieved statehood.
