de Joinville, Jean; ed. Claude Ménard. Histoire de S. Loys IX. du nom, roy de France. Paris: Sebastien Cramoisy, 1617. First edition. Bound in olive morocco, likely by Clovis Eve. A presentation copy to Marie de’ Medici, festooned with her cipher. The original Histoire de S. Loys IX was written in 1309 by Joinville in order to chronicle the life of Louis IX. In the 17th century, the Catholic historian Claude Ménard discovered an unpublished manuscript of the Histoire in Laval, alongside primary source documents in Latin pertaining to the canonization of the king. The work was published anew, a hopeful harbinger of a second golden age of Louis.
