This map, drawn by Jean Baptiste Poirson and engraved in Paris, is based on the work of the German explorer, cartographer, and historian Alexander von Humboldt.

Humboldt compiled a significant portion of the data from materials in Mexico City archives, which included records of expeditions to the Rocky Mountains, Pacific voyages, the work of missionaries, indigenous cartographic sources, as well as his own travels.

The map shows the full extent of the Kingdom of New Spain (Mexico), the United States after the Louisiana Purchase, and the Caribbean Islands of Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Saint Domingue or Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic).
