Louisiana, Texas and Mexico - Mapping Louisiana 1650-1850
For over 150 years, the powers of Europe and the United States struggled for control over North America. Since much of the territory involved was unknown to the combatants, cartography was an important expression of their political and economic ambitions. Each of the following maps from the Arader collection tell part of that remarkable story, as the Spanish, French, English and later the Americans all sought to put their cartographic stamp on the continent. Louisiana, as a concept and as an actual place, plays a key role in the story.
